First One is Out of the Way

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the lack of posting lately, it has been a little tough to find internet lately. We just got internet in our appartment the day before we left for our road trip.

Before I get into the post topic, I feel that it is necessary to mention Nick Adenhart.  I didn’t know him personally, but he is part of the baseball family. This situation has really upset me, and the coverage that ESPN has done has really choked me up.  It really could have been any player in that car.  I have actually been through that intersection before. It was a really sad day.  I think that his family should be kept in everybody’s prayers.

Ok, so on to the topic of this post.  The season has officially begun, unfortunately we are 0-2.  However, the games have been very competitive and could have won both of them.  I threw in relief last night, just one inning.  It was sort of a tune up outing so that I didn’t have an 8 or 9 day lay off without facing hitters.  I got 2 quick outs via a strike out and a 5-3 groundout. Then I made a bad pitch, and a guy hit a triple.  The next guy broke his bat, but got just enough of the ball to get it through the infield.  The next guy grounded into a force out.  The final line was 1 IP 2 H 1 ER 0 BB 1 K.  Really only made that one bad pitch.  It was good to get out there and face hitters though, see how the adrenaline and nerves are gonna react.

I will start on Monday in Akron, and I am really excited about it. I can’t wait to get back out there.  I wanted to go back out for another inning last night, really good to feel those competitive juices flowing again.  Well that’s all I have for now, I will probably post after my outing on Monday.

Until Later,

Moskie

Its is very sad what happened to Nick Adenhart. He will be missed. I was wondering if I could send you a card that you could sign it for me.
Thanks,
Ben

Good luck, Moskos. ‘Burgh Blues will be thinking about your first start. Let us know how you do.

Daniel, I think we all were shocked and saddened by the death of Nick Adenhart. As a parent, I can not even imagine the pain that his parents and the other parents of the victims must be feeling. And it seems as a tragic reminder to all of us of the dangers of drunk driving. Be willing to offend a friend by taking the keys away; they will thank you in the morning. I look forward to hearing how your outing goes on Monday. Good luck and take care!

Ben- Sure thing, just send it to the Altoona clubhouse. I will get it, sign it, and send it back. No worries about the multiple posts, that happens to me sometimes too.

Jesse- Hey whats up man. Have you decided on a college yet? I will be sure to let you know how that start goes.

Julia- It is definitely a shocker, as well as an eye opener. We are not invincible. Its a really horrible thing, the story about his dad standing in front of his empty locker was tough to listen to.

I will be there in Akron, right behind the dugout cheering you on! 🙂

Daniel – Between UofO, UMiami, and UMass. Still undecided.

Hey Dan!
Now that you’ve started the season, I was wondering what is the life of a MiLB player like? Where do players typically live, what are road trips like, and how do you make ends meet because most salaries of minor league players are minimal. I wish you the best of luck this season and the rest of your career!

Hey Daniel,

We miss seeing you in Lynchburg this year. Hope things are going great for you in Altoona. Lynchburg is actually doing good so far this season, they have won 3 out of 4 games! The only bad thing is the cold weather this season.

Dan,

Why don’t you just get traded to the Angels, so you’re friends can come watch you play? Just think about coming out of the pen to close games for us… Pit 2.0 brother.

Well, now I have experienced my first rain delay where they waited while the rain was stopped and started play when the rains came! I think it let up finally in the Aeros half of the 5th?

It was great to meet you in Akron. Also was great to see the other prospects play that we’ve all heard of, like Brian Friday, Jim Neygrych and Jose Tabata. Hope to see you someday at PNC Park.

On a dry, warm day. 🙂

Hey Moskie,

I am hoping you are going to continue this blog, though I know you are all just now returning from the road trip and your home opener is today. It has to be a real challenge to blog from the road, let alone that there is a game every day. Your doing this blog is the main reason I went to Akron.

What do starting pitchers do when they aren’t starting? Do you stay with the club or get to return home early?

Also, I am guessing you might be beating yourself up over Monday – probably no one is harder on yourself than you are. I couldn’t even get your attention with encouragement when you came out of the game and I was sitting right behind the dugout (and the only one in the whole section lol). You can’t focus on just your line for the game…. that weather sucked to play in as it was pouring rain (and cold and windy too) and I couldnt even see home plate since it was all muddy… not sure how you could. The umpire didn’t clean it off til the 6th inning after the rain stopped. They really should have delayed or postponed the game.

The Akron pitchers didn’t really fare well in that weather either. Altoona was back on top in the top of the 5th inning thanks to the walks they were giving up. How can anyone be accurate throwing a soaking wet, muddy ball??? Fielders didn’t have much luck either as errors were charged to both sides but Akron more.

Anyway, this is all water under the bridge (and there was plenty of water), and all you can do is get out and hope for a nice warm dry sunny day for your next start and do the best you can. The conditions for your last start were unfortunate, but it’s behind you now.

-Brian

Glen- The Angels or Dodgers, either way it would be PIT version 2.0.

BurghBlues- Can’t really go wrong with either of those choices. I will go with Miami. The weather, location, ACC give it the edge in my book.

Uci- Sorry I can’t say the same about Lynchburg, as I am glad to be in Altoona. However, Lynchburg has started the year off very strong. Lets hope they can keep it up.

Brian- Thanks for the words of encouragement. The conditions were not very good, but that is no excuse. I should have thrown the ball better. It definitely was a tough day to pitch, there were 18 walks in the game, but there will be days like that. As for the starters, we stay wilth the team all of the time. We are always working, throwing, running, working out, charting. Basically doing everything we can to get better. The day that you pitch is supposed to be the easiest day of the week for a starter. That’s how hard the other days are.
